Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity

A-Level Mathematics

Click here to return to our Physical Education curriculum overview

This is a brand new and exciting course for the KTS PE department that we will launch in September 2020. The Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma is equivalent to 2 A Levels and provides a more vocational and applied look at the exciting and ever-growing world of sport, exercise and leisure.

Sport is an industry with a number of different potential career pathways ranging from coaching and teaching, events management and development, psychology and injury management, to name a few. In addition, the heavy focus on coursework within this qualification and vocational focus of each module, provides students with the independent learning and organisational skills required for the transition into higher education, apprenticeships or employment.

Courses Offered

The Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity.

Equivalent to 2 A levels.

Syllabus Breakdown

Students will study a mixture of more academic concepts in sport, such as sport psychology and body systems, as well as modules with a very vocational, ‘real world’ focus, including; sports coaching, sports injuries, event organisation and fitness testing.

The beauty of this course is the variety of assessment methods. Out of the 11 topics studied, students will be externally assessed in just 3 modules over the course of 2 years. These modules will be assessed through a traditional exam or pre-released case study that the students can prepare for and respond to within a set period of supervised time. All remaining modules are coursework based and will be supported and assessed internally by KTS teaching staff. This blend of assessment methods allows students to compartmentalise their learning in an effective way, while spreading the burden and stress of assessment over a 2 year period and in doing so, relieve the pressure of traditional summative exams at the end of a 2 year course.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Students must meet our general Sixth Form entry requirements of five GCSE grades at 4 or above. There is no requirement to have studied GCSE PE but a general enthusiasm for sport and exercise is essential.

Why Study This Subject?

Sport is a huge, global industry with a massive variety of career pathways and opportunities. This course will develop students’ skill set in both an academic and vocational context, while providing deep, broad knowledge of many aspects within the world of sport, exercise, health and physical activity.

Wherever possible, we try to facilitate the learning of theoretical concepts with practical activities and this provides a refreshing change from the usual rigours of constant classroom based learning.

Wider Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to develop their coaching and leadership skills within Key Stage 3 lessons and will have the opportunity to visit higher education institutes and sport related work settings.

What Can I Do Next?

The diverse nature of this course means that there are a number of post-18 opportunities available to students who study the course. There are more obvious progressions available for students to study sport and related subjects at university but by the end of the 2 year course, students will be well-equipped with the skills needed to flourish in any work-based or apprenticeship environment.

Students of previous vocational sports courses have gone onto a range of post-18 pathways, including; estate agents apprenticeships, fashion degrees, events management, coaching apprenticeships and sport related degrees.
